Aina Fam takes on Canada

Ohhhhh CANADA! Canada trip consisted of a two week long trip! We had planned this trip for a whole year. We would have monthly meetings at Micah's house to make sure we were all on the same page. Shayne and I decided to be the drivers, since we were the only ones with experience with driving on ice and snow. Living in Hawaii, means many of my friends don't get the exposure of super cold weather, unless you live in Wahiawa.

I remember this trip as if it were yesterday. It all started on Dec. 26th, 2018. I remember my parents taking me to the airport at 6pm and I was worried because some thunderstorms had rolled in. As the time to get on the plane drew closer, the longer the delays had started. Each hour we had to wait for the storms to pass. Well it was about 10 pm and we still haven't left. My hopes of getting to Arizona to catch my flight to Seattle seem to dwindle. I had used my miles to fly first class on this trip and was stoked for comfy seating. As 11:30pm arrived, I was finally allowed to get on the plane. I had rebooked my flight to get on my next plane at 1:30 pm. Well....we didn't take off until 12:15am. I had missed my flight and had to reschedule again once we landed. We arrived around 1:45am and I remember crying to Ferd on the phone. For the first time in my life, I had to sleep at the airport. I didn't even have a jacket to keep me warm as I slept on the floor. I thought to myself that I will never forget this experience. Two years laters, and I still remember it vividly. Luckily, I was able to catch the next flight out to Seattle at 10am. I finally landed at 4pm Seattle time. Ashley, Shayne, and Ferd had landed the day before. The original plan was to all land at the same time.

We wanted to fly up two days earlier to explore Seattle and what is has to offer! We did a lot of sight seeing and had a cute Airbnb. Dec. 28th, 2018, meant that Micah and Dayton arrive! Once the whole gang was here, we were ready to make the drive to Squamish, British Columbia. It was about a two hour drive to Vancouver and one hour to Squamish after that. As we got in our van to make the drive, the unthinkable happened, lots and lots of rain. I remember having the windshield wipers on blast. Ferd was my DJ and GPS guide. Dayton tried to serenade us with his backstreet boys songs. As we reached the border, we were excited to get our first stamp in our passports. Only to find out..... they don't stamp passports! This was disheartening.

As we passed the border safely, I remember seeing the speed limits change to kilometers. We had to google the conversions to know what the speed limit was. We stopped in Vancouver to exchange currency and deciding how much money we needed. We were a mess when it came to paying with Canadian money. I learned real fast to just use my credit card since I didn't have to worry about international fees.

As we entered squamish, some of the group saw first for the very first time! Shayne was driving and we located our airbnb. Once we parked, we has our first ever snow fight with the group! It lasted for about an hour until our neighbor came out and told us our rental was not safe. The problem was that our van did not have snow tires! We have no idea till this day how we even made it to the house. Leave it to Ferd to fix all our problems! Each morning we caught ta taxi to the bus station and caught the bus up to Whistler, BC. Whistler was absolutely beautiful! Snowboarding on this mountain was breath taking.

It was my first day snowboarding and let me tell ya... I was terrified. My coordination is not the best, but I make the best of the situation. Shayne gave me a mini tutorial on how to do it. I remember crying to him and telling him how scared I was. Let's just say I ended up walking two miles down a mountain! Micah later joined me because he was over it.

The next day, I knew I couldn't snowboard the next day! I just had to find an alternative. I ended up booking a hiking tour in the mountains. It was probably one of the coolest things I have ever done. At this moment in time, I had realized that Shayne had taken us to the intermediate slope. I found the beginner slope and couldn't believe I listened to him!

It was Dec. 31, 2018 and we wanted to end this year with a BANG! We started off with zip line through the mountains and later get on a snow mobile down the mountains. Dayton was able to conquer his fear of heights and we were all so proud of him! Ferd and I chose to ride on a snow mobile together because it was cheaper and easier for my to film the ride. I started driving for the first twenty minutes and then we switched half way through. Well we were coming to a sharp turn and all I remember is seeing Ferd hop off and I am laying on the ground with the snow mobile on my leg. I was terrified at that moment and started to yell to get it off of me. I remember seeing Ferd freeze up and was scared that he had injured me. Till this day, we just laugh about it and think about how funny that moment was. We literally had a BANG! We stayed in Whistler to Midnight, but realized getting a ride home to Squamish (45 minutes away) was going to be hard. We asked about 20 Taxi's to take us home and they all said no! We even tried calling the Squamish Taxi service. They said they would return our call in ten minutes. It's been a year and still no call back. One guy finally said yes, but only if we paid him $200. We agreed because we just wanted to get home.

Overall, we have LOTS of memories about this trip and definitely one for the books. One day. I will continue to update this story because theres so much more to tell. For now, enjoy the video!

Definitely one for the books
